Canada Day won’t go off with a bang this year, but there’s still much to do to celebrate.
Municipal officials remind that a total fire ban is still in effect for all of Haliburton County, which means all fireworks and open-air fires are prohibited.
Here’s a rundown of July 1 events in the community.
Downtown Minden Hills, 7:30 a.m.: Fishing derby (weigh-in at 11:00 a.m.), St. Paul’s Anglican Church Fashion Show (11:00 a.m.), performance by magician Rob Power (1:00 p.m.), Lions Club Rubber Ducky Race (1:30 p.m.), Haliburton County Farmers Market and Minden Hills Artisan Market in municipal parking lot (10:00 am to 2:00 pm), vendors and exhibits present downtown.
Fireworks at the Minden Fairgrounds postponed to Aug. 6. Water St., Prince St., and Milne St. closed around municipal office.
Minden Hills Cultural Centre (176 Bobcaygeon Rd.), 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Tours and hands-on activities at Museum & Heritage Village, Nature’s Place, and Agnes Jamieson Gallery. Bouncy castle and games, Rob Power (11:00 a.m.), free ice cream while supplies last (12:00 p.m.).
Dorset Heritage Museum (1040 Main St.), 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.: Dorset Heritage Day celebrations with antique vehicles, photo booth, barbeque, marketplace, local authors, military history presentation, kids’ activities, and outdoor exhibits.
Old Mill Marina (1652 Russell Landing Rd.), 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.: Live music by BottomsUp! with beer tent and food trucks.
Oxtongue Lake Community Centre (3971 Hwy 60), 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.: Barbeque lunch by donation to Algonquin Highlands Fire Station 70, sweet treats, silent auction, tours of emergency vehicles, and photo booth.
Cardiff Royal Canadian Legion (2733 Monck Rd.), 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.: Breakfast at Legion, $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for kids under seven.
Kidd School House Museum (5373 Loop Rd., Highland Grove), 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.: Museum open, children’s crafts, local entertainment, horseshoes, and barbeque.
Red Cross Outpost Museum (2314 Loop Rd., Wilberforce), 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.: Flag raising ceremony, live entertainment, games at Curling Club, sandwiches, and cake.
Tory Hill Park (Highway 118 at County Rd. 503), 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Live music featuring Phil O’Reilly, stories of local history. Bring your own lawn chair.
Gooderham Community Centre, (1043 Community Centre Rd.), 3:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.: Children’s activities, face painting, clown, cake, barbeque, and Irondale display. Live show at 7:00 p.m. by The Recycled Teenagers. Fireworks display has been postponed to Aug. 5.
