Haliburton landfills will continue to collect used tires

Dysart landfills will continue to collect used tires until the end of the year.

On January 1, 2019, used tires became the first material to transition to the new ‘individual producer responsibility framework’ under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act of 2016.

Under this framework municipalities have no obligation to collect tires at their landfill sites. It is up to the tire producers to ensure they are meeting collection targets across the province.

There are six private businesses in Dysart that are registered collection sites and they are obligated to accept used tires free of charge.

In November 2019, council recommended the township discontinue tire collection effective June 1, 2020, however concerns were raised and staff have asked for the remainder of the year to seek solutions to local issues with collection.
