If you’re looking to offload cardigans or car batteries, Dysart et al has residents covered.
John Watson, Dysart’s Environmental Manager, says there’s a lot on the go for waste disposal in the municipality.
“If you’ve got textiles such as clothing or bedding you don’t want anymore, all five of our waste disposal sites you can drop off clothing to be reused and recycled,” says Watson. “We have our household hazardous waste days, and residents throughout the county can attend those events. And in Dysart we’ve also been doing the new reuseable recycling bag.”
Dysart’s next Household Hazardous Waste Day is on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Haliburton Landfill. It’s open for all Haliburton County residents to drop off aerosol cans, batteries, chemical products, and other hazards.
The site will not take hazardous waste from businesses and organizations or generic waste from non-Dysart residents, but any resident of the county can attend by showing their municipal landfill card. They’ll be asked to stay inside their vehicles as staff offload the materials.
As for textiles, Watson says Dysart residents can drop those off during business hours at any of the landfills. He says material in good condition will be resold, with the rest shredded and reused for insulation or other applications.
“Since August, we’ve diverted 5.12 metric tonnes of textiles, and we’ve already surpassed that number this year,” says Watson. “So we’re really excited to see the number of residents using that program to keep textiles out of the landfill.”
He adds that Dysart residents can still pick up a free 30-litre reusable recycling bag from any of the five landfills if they did not do so when the program started up in June.
