Increase in suspected opioid poisonings triggers warning from health unit

An increase in drug poisonings has prompted the local health unit to issue a toxic drug supply warning.
The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit says the alert was issued after a “notable” increase in suspected opioid drug poisonings in Northumberland County, as well as a trending increase of them in the County of Haliburton and Kawartha Lakes.
Officials say their system automatically flags increases in overdoses which then triggers enhanced outreach efforts and the distribution of naloxone kits from first responders and community partners.
Officials say the unregularted drug supply may be contaminated with other subdtances, and Naloxone should be used in all suspected overdoses.
