Local resident raises thousands to help in the fight against kids’ cancer

August in the county means a lot of things to a lot of people.

For Katie Woodward, it means jumping on the bike and cycling hundreds of kilometres to help sick kids fight cancer.

For the past three years, Woodward has cycled at least 500 kilometres during the month, and raised thousands of dollars while doing so.

“Cancer is an on-going issue,” says Woodward. “It’s a horrible one. I’ve had a friend this year diagnosed. It’s something we need to figure out how to cure. These are adults that I know, my friends, my family, but I can’t imagine a child going through this.”

Since Aug. 1, nearly $7,500 has been raised toward her $8,000 goal, and 183 kilometres cycled.

On Aug. 14, the Garron Family (from SickKids’ Garron Family Cancer Centre, the largest paediatric oncology centre in the country) has agreed to match any donations raised during the day, up to $1,300,000.

“I’ve had people see me out and about and apologize for donating just $15 or $20 and I always say every single cent helps,” says Woodward. “Money is tight in my home. It’s tight for so many people. If they choose to donate, it’s absolutely wonderful and especially on this day. It turns a $20 into $40. Who’s to say what money is going to solve this? It all goes for the same cause, and it all has such a huge impact.”

This past Saturday, Woodward was accompanied by the Haliburton ATV Association members as she cycled over 40KM from Cemetary Rd in Gelert to Haliburton and back.

“They reached out to help and are generously making a donation to the cause. It’s really been incredible,” said Woodward.

Association members weren’t the only one’s who showed up to support Woodward on the day. Despite raising funds for all kids who are currently fighting the good fight, Woodward says she rides for local seven-year-old Leah who is currently battling Leukemia.

“Her family reached out to me and said they wanted to come see us off on Saturday,” says Woodward. “Leah and her family greeted me and there are a few things I point to in my life that really stays in my heart. And Saturday was one of those times. She was happy, playful, her and her sisters were running around. It was really powerful.”

In September, Woodward will be heading to Hurtin in Haliburton to continue to raise money during an 8 hour race.
